Interview
Tell us about yourself ? Where you come from , your background ?
I'm a singer-songwriter from Sweden. 34 years old. I've written music since I was nine years old. During my years I've played in bands and participated in music contests. When 23 years old I applied to and went to a university music program.
Tell us about your new release ?
It's my first release. 15 tracks - most of them written over 10 years ago but some of those were completed in the fall of 2016 and some also written from beginning to end by then. The release was recorded in my home studio during the fall av 2016. I play and sing almost everything myself on the recordings, which also was crucial to be able to produce it in such a short time while also being a father of three wonderful children. Many late hours in the studio. I've also released the LP in Swedish, but under a different stage name. The final mix I got help with from a close friend who has a big studio and is a great musician I look up to. His name is Erik Nyberg.
What is your work Process around your art ? A typical way you prefer working ?
Usually it starts with me getting a melody in my head. It can happen anytime anywhere. Then I need to repeat it to myself either until I remember it, or I have to record it temporary with my phone. The melody is usually the one for the vocals. It often induces an emotion I can use to bind it to a story and lyrics. After that comes the creation of the different parts of the song, but it's very important for me to sustain the emotion I had in the beginning throughout the song and find pieces of melody and lyrics that fits together with that. Later in the studio I try to bind it all together with melodies of the background instuments and riffs that stick.
What are some milestone moments that define you today ?
Not any particular, but early in life I had some success with learning things on my own and achieving projects with only my own struggles. That made me confident I can learn many things myself and have the possibility to achieve things where I don't have to rely so much on others to complete my projects. You can't stand all on your own, but being such a fantastic thing as a human being, which I believe we all are, you have the ability to control and achieve many things yourself just by will, being whatever it is.
What message would you like to convey to readers of Carry On Harry Studios ?
You can get very far by being loving, humble and kind.
Where can readers and guests of CarryOnHarry Talk Show contact you ?
I have a homepage (http://smisch.com), I'm also on twitter (https://twitter.com/smischmusic) and on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Smisch82), but they may also find me on youtube, soundcloud or just email me (smisch82 at gmail.com)
What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?
Being a father of three children I rehearse when I get opportunity. Can be in the kitchen while cooking dinner, or between other activities. The planned rehearsals with a band I do whenever we have a gig booked.
Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
My first performance in 10 years was 24/2 at Sticky Fingers in Gothenburg, Sweden - but I try to book more and I hope they will come soon
Do you write out your lyrics? Do you ever change a song’s lyrics in live performances?
My lyrics are available at http://smisch.com. I can also offer chords to my songs if there's a request. I also plan to make lyrics vidoes on my youtube-channel to all my songs. So far I've done two. No, I usually don't change the lyrics
It's common for musician to go out of work. How can yousuppliment this time productivly
I have only been there by choice - the past 10 years while having small children and having to spend time with them instead with the music. So I don't know if I will get there. But I know many musicians do eventually. I would then use the time to promote my already released music - and if I had an economy for putting time on anything I want I would learn a lot of languages and travel a lot.
Can you describe your typical workflow when you’re working on your art?
It was best described under question 3 :)
