Dallas Educator Dr. Maria Bridwell Publishes Book on ‘Invitational Education’ in the Classroom
Balle Balle Radio™ Entertainment Desk
Dr. Maria Bridwell has published "Welcome to Our Classroom: Unlocking Student Potential Through Invitational Education," a guide for teachers built on the invitational education framework developed by researchers William Purkey and Betty Siegel Novak, according to the book’s publisher, Page Publishing.
The book draws on Bridwell’s own two decades in schools, first as a classroom teacher for ten years and then as a principal, according to the announcement. In that administrative role, she says she focused on mentoring teachers and developing academic programs. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northland International University, a master’s in teacher leadership from Lamar University, and completed doctoral studies in educational leadership at Liberty University.
Invitational education, the framework the book is built around, emphasizes student performance through intentional inclusion and recognition, contrasted with conventional classroom management approaches. Bridwell’s book applies that research to the practical rhythms of a school year, according to its publisher description, offering teachers specific steps for building a classroom culture around that sense of belonging rather than treating it as an abstract goal.
The book is structured around three main components, per the publisher: tips for instilling values that invite students toward their own potential, strategies for sustaining those practices across a full academic year rather than just at its start, and examples of the approach in practice. It’s aimed at both new teachers and veterans, according to the description, with the stated goal of alleviating the professional challenges inherent in maintaining a constructive learning environment throughout the school year.
"My greatest hope is that educators will recognize the profound impact of creating classrooms where students feel genuinely invited to succeed," Bridwell said in the announcement.
"Welcome to Our Classroom" is available in paperback through Page Publishing and at major retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the Apple iTunes Store.
Studio CarryOnHarry will be curious to see whether Bridwell’s framework offers something distinct from the broader library of classroom-culture guides already aimed at working teachers, or whether its value lies mainly in applying established research to a practical, year-long structure.
