New Devotional from Kankakee Author Draws on 33 Years in Ministry and Lutheran School Leadership

Roy W. Cordes has published a new devotional, "Prime Time Walking and Talking with God," through Christian Faith Publishing. The 222-page book, built around a daily question — when did you last set aside time to walk and talk with God? — asks readers to treat their most alert hours of the day as time reserved for prayer and reflection rather than routine.
Cordes spent 33 years as an elementary Lutheran school principal in three Illinois communities before retiring and taking on a very different kind of public role: for 18 years, he was known as "The Voice" of the Kankakee Community College Cavaliers, calling the school’s athletic broadcasts. The book draws on that decades-long ministry background, along with what the author describes as his own recovery from prolonged bipolar clinical depression, which he presents as part of what shaped his perspective on seeking what he calls divine companionship.
Structurally, the book leans on outdoor church sign sayings and gentle humor as entry points into its chapters, each built around a different angle on making room for God earlier in the day rather than later. The devotional is grounded in biblical examples like Enoch and Elijah—men whose daily communion with God set them apart in scripture and, according to the author’s framing, entered heaven without experiencing death, both marked by daily, sustained communication with God. That pairing anchors the devotional’s argument that consistency, not occasion, is what the author says defines a meaningful spiritual practice.
"My hope is that this book serves as a practical companion for anyone seeking to strengthen their walk with God through intentional time and conversation," Cordes said, according to the announcement.
"Prime Time Walking and Talking with God" is available through Christian Faith Publishing’s website, as well as Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, and the Apple iTunes Store.
Studio CarryOnHarry sees the book’s real hook less in its devotional structure than in Cordes’s own biography — a school administrator turned longtime sports broadcaster is an unusual path to a faith book, and that range is likely what gives this one its voice.
