Retired Sacramento Pulmonologist Pitches Self-Monitoring Alternative to Health-Care Bureaucracy in New Book

Del Meyer, a Sacramento-based pulmonologist, has authored a book contending that the central challenge in American health care stems not from clinical medicine but from the bureaucratic and insurance infrastructure surrounding it. "Health Care America" is out now through Fulton Books.

Meyer’s argument centers on routine, preventive care rather than acute or hospital treatment. According to the announcement, the book lays out an algorithm-based approach that would let individuals track their own wellness and routine health indicators without routing every check through a physician visit or insurance claim, reserving the traditional system for cases that genuinely require hospital-level care. The publisher describes the aim as lowering the cost of day-to-day health monitoring while keeping outcomes steady or improving them through structured, self-directed protocols.

Meyer’s background is clinical rather than political. The announcement credits him with establishing the first comprehensive pulmonary services program in the Sacramento region and building a career around chronic disease management, after training that the publisher describes as at some of the nation’s top institutions. That combination of bedside medicine and systems-level frustration is the lens the book is written through, per the announcement.

"This book emerged from the recognition that Americans pay for complexity and bureaucracy rather than better health," Meyer said in the announcement. "By returning control to informed patients and streamlining diagnostic protocols, we can transform health care from an expensive, frustrating experience into an efficient, accessible system that serves everyone better."

The book joins a long shelf of health-policy critiques aimed at American insurance and administrative costs, a debate that has run for decades among health economists without consensus on a fix. Meyer’s contribution is notably specific and tool-based rather than purely diagnostic, proposing a protocol readers can act on rather than simply a critique of the system as it stands.

"Health Care America" is available through Fulton Books’ website, Amazon, Apple Books, Google Play, and Barnes & Noble.

Studio CarryOnHarry will be watching whether Meyer’s self-monitoring framework draws interest from health economists or physicians outside his own practice — a credentialed author with hands-on clinical experience is a stronger starting point than most self-published health critiques get.
