Second Book on Missouri River Ecosystem Shifts Focus from Damage to Recovery Options

A new book by River Ecosystems, Inc. and Rivers Corp, Inc. (a Nebraska public benefit corporation) examines the Missouri River ecosystem, this time turning from documenting harm to weighing paths toward recovery.

The new title, "Fish, Wildlife, and Water of the Missouri River Ecosystem," follows "8emessourit: The River of the Big Canoes, A Large, National, River Ecosystem in Peril," published in October 2025 through Palmetto Publishing and sold through most booksellers. Both books are available in paperback and hardcover.

The press release notes that the first book documented engineering alterations beginning in the early 1800s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and its effects on the river’s plants, invertebrates, fish, wildlife, hydrology and geomorphology, along with the people who use the river. The Missouri is the longest river in the United States, running through the central part of the country before joining the Mississippi, and has been the subject of federal engineering and flood-control efforts dating back to the 19th century.

The second book contends that ecosystem recovery has failed to date The announcement attributes that failure to mismanagement of the Missouri River Recovery Program and the Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee, along with what the authors describe as shortcomings in how the Endangered Species Act has been applied to the river’s threatened and endangered species. The book sets out options the authors say could begin to reverse that record.
