Bakersfield Firefighter’s New Book Draws on 29 Years to Guide Fire Service Leaders
Balle Balle Radio™ Entertainment Desk
Pat Papasergia, a Bakersfield City Fire Department veteran of twenty-nine years, has published "Company Officer," a book aimed at firefighters moving into their first leadership role, according to the announcement from Page Publishing.
The book tracks a company officer’s first year on the job, starting with the first shift and working through the duties that follow: emergency response, strike team assignments, report writing, inspections, discipline, evaluations and training, according to the publisher’s description. Papasergia frames it as a mix of practical instruction and reflection on what the job asks of the people who do it, including the emotional toll of difficult calls.
Papasergia’s career began as a seasonal wildland firefighter and continued through the Kern County Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service before he reached a leadership post at Bakersfield City, per the announcement. He holds an Associate’s degree along with a Company Officer Certificate and Chief Officer Certificate, and the announcement notes his work on specialized teams and ongoing professional development over the course of his career.
"Through this book, I aim to share the expertise accumulated over my thirty years serving the fire service, providing aspiring company officers with the guidance and tools they need to excel in this rewarding but demanding role," Papasergia said in the announcement.
The book enters a small but established shelf of company officer guides built around fire service leadership standards, including titles used to prepare candidates for NFPA Fire Officer certification. Papasergia’s contribution is narrower in scope than those textbooks, built instead around one department and one career’s worth of firsthand calls and decisions.
"Company Officer" can be purchased at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.
Studio CarryOnHarry sees this as part of a steady stream of practitioner-written guides feeding a fire service that increasingly values firsthand accounts alongside formal training manuals.

At 84, Author Fred Self Recounts a Life From Arkansas Cotton Fields to the Boardroom
Balle Balle Radio™ Entertainment Desk
Fred Self has published "Exciting Adventures & Hidden Miracles: From the Cotton Fields to the Board Room," a memoir tracing his life from a Depression-era childhood in the Ozark Mountains to a career building two businesses and manufacturing patented products distributed internationally. The book is published through Christian Faith Publishing.
Self was born in Arkansas during the Great Depression, and the book describes a childhood marked by poverty common to the era: crossing rivers on logs, riding mules to church, working barefoot through summers. His family migrated across several states, including Indiana, California, Oregon and Washington, following farm work, according to the author’s own account of the book. That early material appears to draw on an earlier work of his, "The Miracles of Time," which covered similar ground.
From that start, Self’s path included high school and college education, military service in both the Army and Merchant Marines, and roles in transportation and law enforcement before establishing his enterprises, according to the announcement. He is credited with patented inventions that were manufactured and distributed internationally. Now 84, he frames the book as a record of divine providence through both hardship and success, dedicating it, in his words, to "God, county, and family."
"This account serves as my testimony to a significant chapter of American experience," Self said in a statement accompanying the release. "I have been blessed beyond measure, and I wanted to honor God by recording how He guided our family through the trials and triumphs that defined our era."
The book runs 438 pages and is available as an ebook and in print through major retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Play and the Apple iTunes Store, as well as through Christian Faith Publishing’s website.
Studio CarryOnHarry sees this as part of a familiar but durable genre: the self-published memoir that treats a long American life as a kind of testimony, written less for a mass market than for family, church, and readers drawn to stories of faith sustained through hard times.

New Book from Author Susan Callender Argues Modern Gender Confusion Traces Back to 19th-Century Ideology
Balle Balle Radio™ Entertainment Desk
Susan Callender has published a new book, "Who is Woman?", that traces the modern debate over gender roles back through more than a century of philosophical and cultural change, arguing it begins with a departure from a biblical model of men and women as equal partners with distinct purposes.
The book, published through Christian Faith Publishing, builds its argument in stages. Callender starts with what she describes as the original creation design, then examines how that design was fractured by sin and, later, by men who she argues prioritized the privileges of leadership while neglecting its responsibilities. From there, per the press release, she then addresses more debated subjects: the emergence of Marxist thought in the nineteenth century, which she argues reframed relations between men and women through a lens of oppressor and oppressed, and later the sexual revolution, which she ties to the spread of contraception and describes as having split sexuality from what she sees as its original sacred purpose.
The publisher contends that the book argues both men and women have departed from scriptural guidance on their roles, and that this drift has encouraged a culture that favors emotion over objective truth, producing confusion around gender, sexuality, and identity. Callender frames her project as a call for Christian readers to return to biblical teaching in what she characterizes as an age of moral relativism.
"My deepest desire is to help readers understand God’s design for women and men—not as a limitation, but as a liberating truth that brings wholeness and purpose to our relationships and our faith," Callender said in the announcement.
The book lands in a crowded field of faith-based writing on gender and scripture, including other recent titles arguing from a complementarian or restorationist reading of biblical texts on women’s roles in family, church, and society. "Who is Woman?" is available in paperback and digital editions through major booksellers and online retailers.
Studio CarryOnHarry will be watching whether Callender’s framing of Marxism and the sexual revolution as linked causes draws engagement beyond readers who already share her theological starting point.
