Bonny Murphy’s “A Proverb a Day” Pairs Scripture with Stories from a Guyanese Childhood

Bonny Murphy has published a new thirty-one-day devotional, "A Proverb a Day (And Lessons I Learned from My Mother)," through Covenant Books. Each chapter draws from one of Proverbs’ thirty-one verses and combines it with a personal story and a maternal saying, according to the announcement.

Murphy was born in Buxton Village, Guyana, and says she accepted Christianity during her high school years at Queen’s College in Georgetown, more than four decades ago. After moving to the United States, she worked as a high school teacher of Spanish and French before entering the legal profession; she now works as an attorney specializing in child welfare law in Washington, D.C., per the announcement.

The book’s structure follows the thirty-one chapters of Proverbs, a book of the Bible traditionally attributed to Solomon, pairing each with reflections meant to connect biblical counsel to the kind of practical, orally transmitted wisdom Murphy describes encountering growing up in Guyana. According to the publisher, the book balances biblical truth with cultural heritage, structured around the idea that the guidance offered by village elders, and by Murphy’s mother specifically, echoes the practical bent of Proverbs itself.

"My prayer is that as readers engage with these proverbs and reflections, they will discover renewed strength for their faith journey and practical tools for navigating life’s complexities," Murphy said in the announcement.

The book is listed under ISBN 979-8-89112-636-7 and is available through Covenant Books’ website, Amazon, Apple Books, Google Play, and Barnes & Noble.

For Studio CarryOnHarry, the detail worth noting is the specificity of the premise: devotionals built around Proverbs are common in Christian publishing, but Murphy’s framing, running her mother’s sayings alongside each verse, gives this one a personal throughline that’s harder to fake than a straight commentary.
