Alien Presents a Hopeful Future in New Children’s Book from Author Tarif Youssef-Agha and Erin Go Bragh Publishing
That is when author Kathleen J. Shields came in to help. With a ton of brainstorming, back and forth writing discussions and some creatively positive outlooks, what came about was a hopeful and encouraging look at what our future could be.
In the new children’s story book, “Alien’s Homework, The Ride is About to Start,” Lalu, a young alien student is given a homework assignment to visit Earth and report back. What he presents is a beautiful world where all of our problems have been fixed and nature is flourishing. He shows what a thriving planet looks like, explains what the problem had been and what was done to fix it. It educates children about what they can do to help, instead of dooming them to a future that can’t be fixed. It is a story we hope everyone takes to heart as Earth is our home – and our home needs us.

Tarif was born in Damascus, Syria in 1957. He started writing short stories and articles in his early years of elementary school and free style poetry in his college years. He earned 2 college degrees in Engineering and Literature from Damascus University. He decided that Syria was not a safe country to live in, so he moved to the U.S. in the Eighties and restarted his life from scratch. He organized several poetry recitals in Houston in the years 2009 and 2010. As soon as the Arab Spring revolutions started late 2010, he instantly moved to their side where he published 3 books in poetry documenting them and one in short stories describing life under dictatorship. In 2018, he published his 5th book ‘Hearts, Tears and the Journey of Life’ that contains collective poems of Love, Lamenting and Meditation.
In 2020, he published his first children book “A Tale of Seven Phones” which became an award-winner blowing the whistle about the young generation’s addiction to smart phones. His next book, “What’s Special About Judy,” also an award winner, and later book “What’s Special About Richie,” both give children the magical secret about how to become special. Following, he published “Me, My Friend and the Monster” which shares a true story from his own life that details how important a child’s imagination is and how important children’s stories are, to young and old. And Now we have “Alien’s Homework” a futuristic look at planet Earth if we decide and commit to take better care of it.

Vicki Thomas is 80 years old, has survived two cancers, and just wrote a book arguing that none of that means she’s done. The author of "From Woodstock to Wisdom…A Boomer’s Journey to 80" was recently featured in an Influential Women tribute recognizing her work on aging and reinvention, according to an announcement from her organization, My Future Purpose.
The book itself is a collection of essays, described by its author as candid and often humorous, covering aging, identity, relationships, technology, loss and the search for purpose. Thomas frames the subject through her own generation’s arc: the Baby Boomers who marched and questioned authority in their youth are now, in her telling, confronting ageism and invisibility in later life. According to the announcement, the essays range from caregiving and changing bodies to what she describes as becoming an influencer at 79.
Thomas’s path to writing that book runs through several careers. In the 1970s she became head of marketing and advertising for the Credit Union National Association, working in what was then a male-dominated financial-services industry. She later worked on projects tied to American Express, Prudential Securities and Merrill Lynch focused on women and the pre-retiree market, and spent time at the ABC Television Network before moving into nonprofit work.
That nonprofit work included Purple Heart Homes, which builds accessible housing for disabled veterans; Thomas’s media and outreach work there earned her the $100,000 Purpose Prize from Encore.org in 2013, an award recognizing people over 60 for social-impact work. She has described that period alongside a more personal turning point: a diagnosis of a rare, aggressive cancer that came with a prognosis of three to five years to live, followed two years later by a breast cancer diagnosis. She has adopted the term "bonus year" to describe each year she has lived beyond her initial three-to-five-year prognosis, as noted in the organization’s statement.
Thomas is currently co-founder and Chief Purpose Officer of My Future Purpose, an organization she runs with Joyce Cohen that works with people navigating retirement and life transitions through workshops, speaking engagements and a program called Pathways to Purpose. The organization’s pitch, per the announcement, is a reframing question: not what someone is retiring from, but what they’re still capable of becoming. Thomas is also developing a related project, "From Woodstock to Wisdom: Passing the Mic," intended to bring college students into conversation with older adults about purpose and generational perception.
The book and the broader effort share a label Thomas uses for the movement she’s trying to build: a "What’s Next movement," aimed particularly at older women she says are too often written off as finished contributors.
Studio CarryOnHarry finds the more interesting story here isn’t the memoir itself but the timing: Thomas is explicitly targeting a generation now aging into the questions it once thought it had permanently deferred, and betting there’s an audience for that discomfort stated plainly rather than softened.

Kathleen Austin has published "Beary Best Friends A Visit to the Dentist," the third book in her children’s series, through Page Publishing.
The series follows a group of bear characters through everyday childhood experiences, and this installment centers on a trip to the dentist. According to the publisher’s synopsis, the book ends with the characters walking out of the dental office and wondering where their next adventure will take them, a framing consistent across the earlier entries in the series and one that suggests Austin is building toward further books rather than closing out the story.
Austin, a graduate of Hunterdon Central High School, lives in Milford, New Jersey, with her husband. She has said the characters draw on people in her own life, including her nephew Anthony, her cousin Stephen Perry, who lives in England, and her son Jeffrey Jr. The book’s dedication credits Dr. Thomas Evers and his staff, whom Austin has said informed the story’s approach to dental care.
"I wanted to create a story that shows children how a trip to the dentist can actually be an adventure," Austin stated according to the press release. "Through the eyes of my beloved characters, I hope every child discovers that taking care of their teeth is something to embrace with joy and confidence."
The publisher describes the book as aimed at easing children’s anxiety about dental visits through themes of courage and friendship. "Beary Best Friends A Visit to the Dentist" is available in paperback and through major retailers including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, and the Apple iTunes Store.
