Author John Loring’s New Book, “Bigtops to Billboards,” Tells the True Story of Colonel Burr Robbins and How He Fulfilled His Dream by Beginning the Burr Robins Circus
[ad_1]
“‘Bigtops to Billboards’ follows the astonishing career of Colonel Burr Robbins beginning with rare, original letters from the Civil War frontlines and then Burr Robbins’ promotion at twenty-seven to colonel in the Union Army,” writes Loring. “The war concluded in 1865, with his love of showmanship, he opened a cabaret theater in the boom and soon bust Pennsylvania oil rush which rapidly collapsed.
“Having briefly worked for the mid-west’s largest traveling circus as a teenager before the war, he set his not modest goal on building a circus of his own in southern Michigan beginning with only two white hens dyed red and green and touted as ‘the sacred fowl of India,’ one talented monkey, a young local dancing bear, a mule with an unusually broad head said to tell fortunes, one hawk (also colorfully dyed) and his own talents at singing, storytelling and advertising.
“Joining forces and networking with other small shows and signing on partners with major connections in the circus world, he built the Burr Robbins Circus into the third largest circus in America and changed the look of American towns and cities with his giant posters.”
His faith in poster advertising led him after his circus days to buy up Chicago’s largest bill-posting firms and consolidate them into the American Advertising and Bill-Posting Company, which evolved into America’s giant, once leading billboard company, General Outdoor Advertising Co.
Loring continues, “The book is richly illustrated with ‘cabinet card’ photos of performers, animals, wonderfully exaggerated wording in circus advertising and much good advice on how to honestly make your way in the world from seemingly hopeless beginnings to fame and fortune.”
Published by Page Publishing, John Loring’s stirring tale will take readers on the unforgettable journey of one man’s path to build success for himself from his humble start and discover the early history of a legendary part of America’s circus and entertainment history.

Katt Taylor’s New Novel Follows a Woman’s Fractured Spirit from Darkness to Awakening
Balle Balle Radio™ Entertainment Desk
Katt Taylor has released "The Mental Woman Within," a novel tracing the spiritual unraveling and eventual awakening of a woman named Sarah Jane, published through Newman Springs Publishing.
The book’s synopsis describes the account of Sarah Jane, whose consciousness became trapped at age five and existed in profound darkness for decades, unaware of her own aliveness while what the synopsis calls forces of fear, shame, and temptation work against her. The narrative follows her toward what the publisher frames as a spiritual reckoning with good and evil, built around a recurring image of a "garden of truth" where hope, possibility, and fear coexist. According to the book’s own description, Sarah Jane eventually confronts a force called Destruction, framed as working against what the text calls God’s plan for her, and the synopsis notes a follow-up title, "Luke’s Destruction," as forthcoming.
Taylor was born to a teenage mother in Tallulah, Louisiana, and has said her mother’s own unpublished writing first pushed her toward authorship. She raised five children, now has fifteen grandchildren, and counts V.C. Andrews among her primary literary influences on her approach to emotionally charged, spiritually driven storytelling.
"This story represents my attempt to give voice to those who feel trapped within themselves," Taylor said in a statement announcing the book. "Sarah Jane’s journey is about recognizing that even in our darkest moments, transformation and spiritual awakening remain possible if we choose to listen to the voice within."
"The Mental Woman Within" is available at bookstores and through major online retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, and the Apple iTunes Store.
Studio CarryOnHarry will be watching to see whether Taylor’s promised sequel, "Luke’s Destruction," builds directly on Sarah Jane’s story or strikes out into new territory.

New Children’s Book ‘Mocha, the Ground Fairy’ Follows a Guinea Pig Determined to Fly
Balle Balle Radio™ Entertainment Desk
Dr. Leslie Merida-Gonzalez has published a new children’s book, "Mocha, the Ground Fairy," through Fulton Books. The story follows Mocha, a brown, fluffy guinea pig who attempts to fly using wings built from leaves and twigs, only to land, each time, skidding on her bottom, which earns her the teasing nickname from her fellow guinea pigs.
Merida-Gonzalez is a music teacher in Port St. Lucie, Florida, where she works with children with varying needs. She holds a doctorate in education with a focus on exceptional student education, a background she says shapes how she thinks about reaching different kinds of young readers. According to the announcement, the guinea pig characters in the book are drawn from pets her own children had growing up.
The book centers on Mocha’s refusal to quit despite ridicule from her peers, drawing courage, in the story, from her grandmother’s fairy tales. "Through Mocha’s journey, I wanted to remind children that falling doesn’t mean failing," Merida-Gonzalez said in the announcement. "Every stumble is simply another step toward finding the magic that’s been inside them all along." The publisher describes the book as aimed at encouraging children to keep trying after setbacks and to embrace what makes them different.
"Mocha, the Ground Fairy" is available in bookstores and through major online retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, and the Apple iTunes Store, as well as directly through Fulton Books’ website.
Studio CarryOnHarry sees stories like Mocha’s as part of a steady stream of small-press children’s books built around a simple, repeatable idea: a animal protagonist, a visible flaw, and a lesson about persistence. The appeal isn’t novelty, it’s execution, and that’s worth watching for in any read-aloud picture book pitched this way.
