Lone Wolves Will Have NY Premiere at the Marvels of Media Film Festival on Friday, March 28 at 6:00 p.m.
The film was inspired by the experiences of Gen X women foregoing expensive IVF treatments and sperm banks in search of more affordable and safe ways to find volunteer sperm donors and take their fertility journeys into their own hands. These stories struck a chord with co-writer and lead Actress, Cora Vander Broek; Director, Ryan Cunningham; and Producer, Heidi-Marie Ferren, who all had their own connection to that journey, along with Matt’s experience as an adult living with Autism.
Excited about Lone Wolves’ potential to explore fertility and aging from a nuanced and comedic angle they crafted a story that also dives into friendship and shared anxieties over belonging and acceptance. Foss stated that, “As a person with Autism, I was particularly thrilled to also tell a story around neurodiversity and those Gen X’ers discovering how their brains worked when they grew up in a system and time without the tools or interest in investigating who and how they were.”
So, with a diverse, female-led team of first-time filmmakers who grew up loving 90’s era, grassroots features shot on shoestring budgets, the team embarked on making a passion project of their own with an ambitiously small budget and homegrown resources. Their budget was a mere twenty thousand dollars in an indie film market of projects that average at least ten to fifty times that number. “We feel this model honors the true meaning of ‘independent’ film, ” says co-writer and lead actress, Cora Vander Broek, “There’s nothing like creating and collaborating with like-minded artists you trust. There was so much love in the room that it made working within our constraints less of a burden and more of an enticing challenge that galvanized the process.”
The Marvels of Media Film Festival is part of the Museum of the Moving Image’s initiative to promote and expand the accessibility efforts for autistic visitors through the creation of the MoMi Visual Story Guide, a sensory relief space in the Media Lab. This year’s festival was organized by MoMI’s Associate Curator of Public Programs Tiffany Joy Butler, MoMI’s Director of Education Leonardo Santana-Zubieta, Access Consultant Miranda Lee, Tour Consultant Sachar Mathias, and MoMI Intern Alex Poppe, with the Marvels of Media Steering Committee: filmmaker and playwright Jackson Tucker-Meyer, President and Founder of Strokes of Genius, Inc. Rosa Martínez, and Film Event Accessibility Consultant and Producer Yaara Kedem.
Lone Wolves is honored to be a part of the Marvels of Media Film Festival programming and their commitment to highlighting and supporting neurodivergent stories, filmmakers and viewing experiences.

Vicki Thomas is 80 years old, has survived two cancers, and just wrote a book arguing that none of that means she’s done. The author of "From Woodstock to Wisdom…A Boomer’s Journey to 80" was recently featured in an Influential Women tribute recognizing her work on aging and reinvention, according to an announcement from her organization, My Future Purpose.
The book itself is a collection of essays, described by its author as candid and often humorous, covering aging, identity, relationships, technology, loss and the search for purpose. Thomas frames the subject through her own generation’s arc: the Baby Boomers who marched and questioned authority in their youth are now, in her telling, confronting ageism and invisibility in later life. According to the announcement, the essays range from caregiving and changing bodies to what she describes as becoming an influencer at 79.
Thomas’s path to writing that book runs through several careers. In the 1970s she became head of marketing and advertising for the Credit Union National Association, working in what was then a male-dominated financial-services industry. She later worked on projects tied to American Express, Prudential Securities and Merrill Lynch focused on women and the pre-retiree market, and spent time at the ABC Television Network before moving into nonprofit work.
That nonprofit work included Purple Heart Homes, which builds accessible housing for disabled veterans; Thomas’s media and outreach work there earned her the $100,000 Purpose Prize from Encore.org in 2013, an award recognizing people over 60 for social-impact work. She has described that period alongside a more personal turning point: a diagnosis of a rare, aggressive cancer that came with a prognosis of three to five years to live, followed two years later by a breast cancer diagnosis. She has adopted the term "bonus year" to describe each year she has lived beyond her initial three-to-five-year prognosis, as noted in the organization’s statement.
Thomas is currently co-founder and Chief Purpose Officer of My Future Purpose, an organization she runs with Joyce Cohen that works with people navigating retirement and life transitions through workshops, speaking engagements and a program called Pathways to Purpose. The organization’s pitch, per the announcement, is a reframing question: not what someone is retiring from, but what they’re still capable of becoming. Thomas is also developing a related project, "From Woodstock to Wisdom: Passing the Mic," intended to bring college students into conversation with older adults about purpose and generational perception.
The book and the broader effort share a label Thomas uses for the movement she’s trying to build: a "What’s Next movement," aimed particularly at older women she says are too often written off as finished contributors.
Studio CarryOnHarry finds the more interesting story here isn’t the memoir itself but the timing: Thomas is explicitly targeting a generation now aging into the questions it once thought it had permanently deferred, and betting there’s an audience for that discomfort stated plainly rather than softened.

Kathleen Austin has published "Beary Best Friends A Visit to the Dentist," the third book in her children’s series, through Page Publishing.
The series follows a group of bear characters through everyday childhood experiences, and this installment centers on a trip to the dentist. According to the publisher’s synopsis, the book ends with the characters walking out of the dental office and wondering where their next adventure will take them, a framing consistent across the earlier entries in the series and one that suggests Austin is building toward further books rather than closing out the story.
Austin, a graduate of Hunterdon Central High School, lives in Milford, New Jersey, with her husband. She has said the characters draw on people in her own life, including her nephew Anthony, her cousin Stephen Perry, who lives in England, and her son Jeffrey Jr. The book’s dedication credits Dr. Thomas Evers and his staff, whom Austin has said informed the story’s approach to dental care.
"I wanted to create a story that shows children how a trip to the dentist can actually be an adventure," Austin stated according to the press release. "Through the eyes of my beloved characters, I hope every child discovers that taking care of their teeth is something to embrace with joy and confidence."
The publisher describes the book as aimed at easing children’s anxiety about dental visits through themes of courage and friendship. "Beary Best Friends A Visit to the Dentist" is available in paperback and through major retailers including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, and the Apple iTunes Store.
Studio CarryOnHarry sees this as a small but telling entry in a durable corner of children’s publishing: books built around a single anxiety-inducing milestone, from first haircuts to first dentist visits, that parents reliably seek out regardless of how crowded that shelf already is.
