“I wanted to challenge myself so many of the poetic forms in this collection were new to me. Working with new poetic forms while trying to convey the passion of rugby was a fun experiment.” – Author Laura DiNovis Berry
About You and Your background ?
Writing and sports have been a part of my life ever since I was a child. While those worlds seem to be at odds with each other, as I grew older I realized I could marry these two passions through poetry.
How much does your life reflects in your poetry ? Where do you draw your poetic expressions ?
There is much of my life reflected in this chapbook — at least quite a lot of my rugby life. I draw my poetic expressions from moments in time that strike deep chords in me or instants that, upon later reflection, actually had a profound impact on my life.
Title Of Your New Release
Egg Shaped Ball
What is the central theme of this book ?
These poems host a celebration for rugby and for all the women who chase that egg shaped ball.
Source Of Expression behind your expressions in this book ? What emotion goes along ?
These poems run down the pitch and will make your blood pump with every line. The beauty and brutality of rugby is shared through verse for everyone to take part.
How easy or difficult it is to conceive such book ? What are the Odds ?
I wanted to challenge myself so many of the poetic forms in this collection were new to me. Working with new poetic forms while trying to convey the passion of rugby was a fun experiment.
How different it is to write a book like this away from other genre books ?
It is always interesting writing a poetry book, because poems are a sort of puzzle that you have to work out but there is no answer key to tell you if you’ve done a good job or not.
How many books have you written and how different is new book ? Difference is in which specific area ?
This is my second chapbook, and it is incredibly different. It is much more focused on one particular topic and has a wider variety of poetic forms.
What is over all objective of expression in this book ? What sort of audience will find it convincing to relate?
I am hoping to reach out to rugby players and also to those people who look at the sport and think, “Why on earth would anyone play this crazy game?” For the rugby players, I hope this serves as an ode and to the confused I hope this serves as a translation.
Why will you recommend this book to readers ?
I believe (and hope) that Egg Shaped Ball is a dynamic read and can open a person’s eyes into the world of women’s rugby.
Have you already started working on next book ? What is on your mind for it ?
I’m actually in the process of writing a fantasy novel. It’s been quite a lot of fun, but I hope to make it a bit thrilling and spooky.
Any good tips you would like to share for new aspiring authors apart from saying just start the book ?
Read other writers! It’s so helpful to learn new ways of expression and delight in other’s turns of phrase.
How did you hear about CarryOnHarry ? Any message for Studio ? Any Suggestion that we can make it better ?
